Simple Rules of Pond Management

Pond management is not a difficult or strenuous task, and really anyone should be able to manage any sized pond without too much difficulty. Unfortunately for many, however, pond management does take quite a few hours of time if you want to make your pond look sparkling clean. However, if you are able to find the time to keep on top of your pond’s health on a regular basis, you will find that you do not need to spend countless hours cleaning the pond once it becomes horribly dirty. With a few simple tips and accessories, even the most disgustingly algae covered pond can look fresh and clean in no time.

When you first begin any pond management project, you will want to test to make sure that your filtration equipment is working properly. Check all of your hoses and valves and make sure that there is proper suction in the areas where the intake hoses run. Chances are that if you have not done any pond management in some time, you will need to clean out your filter to remove any debris or dead algae which may have accumulated. Once this is complete you will notice that your filter and pump will be able to function much more efficiently.

After all of your preliminary checks have been completed, use a pH checking device (or litmus paper) to determine the acidity of your pond. This is an important step in pond management, as the pH of a pond is a good indicator of algae growth.  If your pond is somewhere around pH 7.0, then everything is great and you can move on – otherwise you will need to purchase some suitable chemicals to even out the pH to a neutral level at 7.0. When the pH has been completely taken care of, you will need to shift your pond management skills over to examining for algae and eliminating any you may find. Green, red and brown algae can be dealt with by either adding good bacteria to your pond or introducing a variety of different pond antimicrobial products. Conversely, if you have string algae, you will want to find an anti-algae product which will not damage the other flora in your pond and will instead only target string algae.
