Carp Or Goldfish - Which Is A Better Water Garden Fish?

Basically, there are two types of water garden setups you could decide to build. First, we have what we can consider as the mainstream variety these days, that is, the waterfalls-type of water gardens which have captured the fancy of many people in recent years because of the sheer majesty of cascading waters through elegantly positioned rocks and slabs. The second, however, is more rewarding in an entirely different way. This would be the pond water garden, which is quieter, more serene, and as such, more calming.

A pond water garden is usually populated by carp or koi. This means less vegetation for your setup. The reasons? Carp or koi eat up water plants, so even if you'd strive to grow some vegetation, they'd eventually be diminished by the fish. Those little creatures can have a voracious appetite.

A pond water garden can likewise be populated by goldfish. Goldfish are more gentle fish. They'd eat the vegetation as well, but not as ferociously and as insatiably as carp and koi. Perhaps, this can be attributed to their smaller size as well. Where your ordinary carp or koi can grow to a maximum of 12 inches in length, the biggest specie of goldfish can only boast of 4 inches, though the normal varieties are only 2.5 inches long.

Indeed, the selection of water garden fish should be consistent with the overall design you have in mind for your waterscape. Here are the rules to be followed:

* If you desire a water garden with cascading streams, it would be wise to consider carps or koi, since they are hardier.

* The same is true for water gardens that have deep bottoms. Carp and koi are bottom dwelling fish that despise sunlight.

* Goldfish are perfect for smaller water gardens, but they could also be used for ponds, though the latter may be too big an environment for them.

* If you want to add a touch of green for your water garden, then a goldfish would be the perfect water garden fish for your needs, as they could peacefully coexist with the plants.

Truly, your selection of a water garden fish would boil down to these two classes. There are a lot of types to choose from, however. Popular goldfish varieties are Shubunkins, Comets, Sarassa comets, Calico fantails and Red fantails. Popular carp or koi varieties are the normal ones and the butterfly class.
